Fans of science fiction and fantasy have often had quite a bad press in the past. If you want an excellent example of this then go watch the so terrible its good film Mazes and Monsters – the first lead role ever for a young Tom Hanks – that details the dangers of being a geek and playing a thinly disguised version of Dungeons and Dragons. This is something that probably still affects people’s stereotypical image of fans of these things. You’ve got the derogatory terms ‘geek’, ‘nerd’ and so on, and the perpetual thought of a pedantic Tolkien fan in love with elves and dwarves.
Well, in this day this should be no more. We are undergoing a geek revolution, and nowhere is that more evident than in the fiction on our film and TV screens. The Lord Of The Rings films broke numerous box office records, and were seen by untold millions. Currently showing on TV is an adaption of that most dense and political of books, A Game of Thrones. One of the most popular BBC series currently on air is Dr Who. There has never been a better time to rise up, reclaim the word ‘geek’ and overthrow the masses. Or better yet, become the masses; let’s have a world filled with mystery, intrigue and fantasy rather than one filled with the drudgery of Eastenders, Hollyoaks and Coronation Street. NB
