Fans of science fiction and fantasy have often had quite a bad press in the past. If you want an excellent example of this then go watch the so terrible its good film Mazes and Monsters – the first lead role ever for a young Tom Hanks – that details the dangers of being a geek and playing a thinly disguised version of Dungeons and Dragons. This is something that probably still affects people’s stereotypical image of fans of these things. You’ve got the derogatory terms ‘geek’, ‘nerd’ and so on, and the perpetual thought of a pedantic Tolkien fan in love with elves and dwarves.
