Sight & Sound takes an editorial stance that we are proud to support – every single review, whether covering one of the many new releases to hit the cinema screens or the just released DVDs doesn’t have a rating.

Confusing? Well, you could say that they do have a rating, but that you have to actually read the reviews as the rating is in the words. There is far too much emphasis nowadays on the importance of numbers and stars, quantifiable measurements that can’t ever truly hope to convey the experiences of the reviewer. We’re even in a situation where people get bonuses based upon how well a piece of media, such as a film or game, scores on a website such as Metacritic. And this simply is not on.

Reviewers have far more to contribute than a simple ‘4/5’. A score can never truly capture all the nuances of a film – why it is good, why it might be bad, what to expect, why some people might not like it but others might. A film is an experience, a story to be told, not something that can simply be summed up in a number. We believe in taking the effort to read what has been written, take it onboard, agree or disagree and work from there.

Overall we give this magazine 4.5/5 – would read again. NB
