There’s far more to surfing than simply getting on a board and falling over in a wave. Surfing is a lifestyle. Getting up whenever the surf is at its best, maintaining and perfecting your board and equipment and spending the hours needed to actually be able to surf rather than simply fall over requires dedication, but it is all worth it.
Surfing can be whatever you want it to be. Whether you want to spend a relaxed day at the beach, messing around in the surf with a few pals before heading back to the bars and then home, or to test yourself against some of the most powerful forces that nature can throw at you, you’ll find it in the surf.
What’s more impressive, however, is the attitude towards life that surfers possess. Maybe it’s the knowledge that there is possibly a wave out there with your name on it so you might as well enjoy the now, but surfing community is incredibly laid-back, welcoming and friendly. Surfing is perhaps the activity which we here at Newsstand would most like to be good at – sadly our current expertise is limited to managing to not quite fall over whilst stationary on a board on the sand. But perhaps we’ll take some time out this summer, head down to Cornwall and hit the beaches, try hard and succeed. And hopefully we’ll see you there too. NB
