Today’s Rail offers a mainly contemporary view of trains, something that can be rather forgotten in a market dominated by understandable but sometimes overstated nostalgia for the days of steam. We were therefore slightly surprised to see coverage of heritage news in the pages of Today’s Rail UK, but before crying ‘Sacrilege!’ and letting slip the dogs of war we took a moment to consider what it means to truly appreciate the railways.
The true train enthusiast has a passion for rail that transcends time, place and scale. There should be no prejudices based upon size, scale or gauge, everything, both chuntering away in the fast and currently lugging passengers and freight around the world shares that commonality of being a train. Let there be no more wars over gauge, no angry arguments over whether steam, electric or diesel represents the best method of locomotion. The Great Train Wars are over, let us join together and celebrate the wonder of rail as brothers.
And go get those shifty looking bus fanciers, blasphemous deniers of the only true form of public transport. (The above is merely the witterings of a foolish writer, and is in no way an actual call to arms or enticement of violence. Or something.) NB
