Taking a practical, no-nonsense approach to the world of shipping, Ships Monthly covers shipping in pretty much every form. Just don’t call them boats!

Quite where the dividing line between a ship and a boat is we are a little unsure, but there definitely is one. When we hear ‘boat’ we think of rowboats, or plucky little watercraft sailing the seas at constant risk of being sunk. ‘Ship’, however, conveys something much grander, a mighty vessel, not simply sailing on the sea but mastering it. We think of mighty container ships, ferries, aircraft carriers that are so massive that they look as though they should have no business being able to float, yet they do with effortless ease.

Of course, that is not always the case. There have been some tragic reminders of late, such the terrible Costa Concordia incident, that no matter how well we build ships they are forever only a simple misjudgement away from a catastrophic occurrence. Ships Monthly will keep you up to date with all the goings on in the world of shipping, both tragic and rather more cheerful, and includes some fantastic nostalgia-filled looks at the world of past shipping. It is, of course, full of some excellent photography of ships, if that sort of thing floats your boat. Or ship. NB
