Transport News is an impressively long running publication – the section ‘down memory lane’ is basically a look back at what was going on in the pages of Transport News 30, 25, 20, 15 and 10 years ago that month. The reason for this longevity is simple – people will always needed physical things hauled from one place to another.

The modern world that we inhabit takes great pleasure in minimising travel. Rather than travel somewhere for a meeting you can teleconference or simply give someone a call. You can sort out all manner of things via email rather than in paper or person. Everything is all about data rather than physicality, yet this is something that doesn’t actually work in the real world.

Say you fancy something to eat, perhaps a tasty pie from your local bakery. You walk down there and, using your fancy new technology, pay for it with a wave of your smart-phone or wallet. You can use as much data as you like to pay for it, but the pie has to be something physical, something real, otherwise you’re just biting into the idea of a pie – not very filling at all. Someone had to ship the ingredients that went into the pie to and from factories and to the bakery you bought it in. No matter how much ‘easier’ technology makes our lives, data can never supplant the reality of a delicious tasty pie, and thus someone will always be needed to move things around. NB
