We are hard pressed to think of anything more fun-sounding than taking a gutsy, petrol-engined off-road out into the world for an afternoon of messing around. There’s that glorious combination of spending time in the outdoors – something that we in Britain should do far more often – and spending time with your mates, and thrashing a bike around.

Whilst we can see the obvious benefits to be found in the eventual switching of vehicle power from petrol and diesel to electricity and possibly eventually hydrogen, we can’t ever see it working in a sport such as off-road biking. The throaty roar of the petrol engine is simply too much a part of it. Why replace something wonderfully tactile and real – you burn a fuel in order to gain motion, straightforward but effective – where you can feel how the engine is going, with something as artificial feeling as electric power? There is nothing real feeling at all about such vehicles, and the gentle whine of them accelerating will never be an adequate substitute for the wonderful noises of a good old fashioned fuel engine.

So, celebrate the glory of the petrol engine whilst you still can, grab a copy of Trial magazine, pick up a bike and have some fun. There might not be long left to do it. NB
