Vav is the perfect example of a slightly niche craft hobby magazine done right. The quarterly publication of this means that those who buy copies will feel that they are getting nicely contemporary news and views from the craft, yet that each issue isn’t padded out in order to have enough content to be published. Rather than getting a monthly mag with everything thrown in, instead you get a quarterly where everything has been carefully considered in order to understand whether it is worthy of inclusion.
The balance between articles and projects is also pretty much spot on, being a 50-50 split down the middle. This means that there is plenty of space for the latest news and interesting feature on Scandinavian weaving, but still a good amount of projects to try out at home. The projects themselves are useful and practical, which is always a good thing.
Now we come to the issue of the cost. This is perhaps a little more expensive than your typical arts magazine, but what you get represents pretty good value. The magazine is beautifully produced, meaning that it’s something you will want to keep rather than ever throw away, being printed on some excellent quality paper.
For any weavers, Scandinavian or otherwise, you can’t really go wrong with Vav. NB
