We would have loved to have been classical musicians here at Newsstand. To have a mastery of a chosen instrument, to know the ins and outs of musical notation and know our allegros from our fortissimos. Sadly that’s not the case (the highest qualification any of us possess is a grade two in piano, hardly enough to wow an audience at the Sydney Opera House) but we do have the highest of respect for the classical musician and the many, many long hours of study they must have put in to be at the top of their profession.
Of course, listening to the music takes nearly as much work. We’re not saying it’s an ordeal (quite the contrary in fact), but there’s a lot of effort on the part of the listener that perhaps goes unrecognised. This can be true for any kind of music, but classical music is where you find the highest complexities and nuances – the little parts of music that move us. After all, the emotion you feel whilst listening to a work by anyone – Mozart or Motorhead – is created by your response. So, let’s enjoy the different feelings that can be brought out of us by music – and appreciate the classics as capable of inspiring great emotion. All rise for the national anthem, whichever nation you are from. NB
