Apparently, according to our extensive research, the Cafe Racer scene started in the UK in the 60’s, and was a sort of subset of the Rocker culture. The term apparently referred to those who would hang out with their motorcycles at the various roadside cafes to be found across the country (before everything became a Little Chef, and then subsequently stopped being a Little Chef and started being closed), doing their best to look cool.
Originally the phrase was used as a bit of an insult by people who actually cared more about their motorcycles than looking good, but as with many such terms it was adopted by the target. Cafe Racers are cool, that’s for sure – we could definitely imagine The Fonz sat outside a café, posing ever so slightly with his Cafe Racer bike nearby on its kickstand.
The Cafe Racer scene is apparently having quite the revival in America, which is why this mag is US based rather than from the UK. Perhaps being a Cafe Racer makes more sense over there than over here, after all ‘Moterway Services Racer’ doesn’t have quite the same ring to it… NB
