Fishkeeping is a pretty good hobby to us here at Newsstand. Perhaps that’s down to the fact that is one of the forms of animal keeping that requires the lowest levels of input and effort – no need to take your goldfish for a walk. Just remember to keep the water fresh and clean, the filter and, if necessary, heater up and running. Oh, and of course buy a few fish, otherwise you’ve begun the fascinating hobby of practical water-keeping.

Since tropical fish began to be kept, we now have an astonishing variety of beautiful and colourful fish available to be kept at home. However, we are in fact champions of the humble Hypostomus Plecostomus – commonly known as the Pleco. This is not because it is the most vibrant of fish, in fact it is rather a dull brown, but instead because it is about the most useful aquarium fish in existence – an algae eater. The pleco will swim around in your tank, sucking on the glass and the pebble and even the tiny little diver put in there for a laugh, eating up all the algae and keeping it clean, meaning even less effort is required on your part. Excellent work, our fine-finned-friend. NB
