What we love more than anything about the model railway community is that when building their magnificent recreations and original designs, they always go beyond a simple, plain recreation of the trains and include little, subtle details such as a swan on a river underneath a railway bridge, a fellow talking to a policeman or a long abandoned and rusted van.

This moves the hobby from a slightly boring one where accuracy and reality is all that is important to a nice and enjoyable one, full of amusing incidental detail. It is the surroundings that you can see the love that the community gives to their work – the train would be just the same regardless of the detail of the surroundings, but instead the trains are situated within tiny, believable worlds.

Adding little details like those bring the hobby to life. It is the beautiful scale landscapes, and created with patience and determination, that fascinates and impresses us, with the movements of the trains simply adding a working focus and reason for them to exist. So, keep working, modellers, and bring us ever more detailed miniature worlds filled with curious and quaint asides, and we’ll keep reading your magazines. NB
