Der Spiegel, pre eminent in Germany and one of the most widely circulated in Europe, published in Hamburg since 1947. Founded in 1946 as Diese Woche (“This Week”), the magazine is renowned for its aggressive, vigorous, and well-written exposés of government malpractice and scandals and for its photography.
Founded in Hanover in 1947 by the British, Der Spiegel magazine was quickly taken over by Germany following editorial disagreements, and since then has reached reached a readership of more than one million weekly, throughout Europe and the rest of the world.
This German magazine provides an informed, well-rounded independent critical voice on all aspects of current affairs, politics, and world affairs.
Since their launch they have moved with the times, producing Spiegel International, an English-speaking version with similar content, and Spiegel Online, voted Germany’s most popular online news resource.
Der Spiegel magazine also has a reputation for uncovering or, some might say, producing political scandals, which has earned it the respect of many, and the interest of most. ‘Der Spiegel’ translated means ‘The Mirror’, and is designed to reflect the condition of the State and the people back at them: as an analysis of the current state of affairs, it is designed to make people figuratively open their eyes and take a look at themselves.
Despite the name, it is never to be confused with the British ‘Mirror’: Der Spiegel is a largely unbiased powerhouse of intellectual and objective political and social commentary.
